The Photographer

About Barry

As a native Californian, I grew up near the ocean in Southern California and have now lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly 40 years. As a result, my love for palm trees and beautiful waterscapes made me an island boy with a love for the tropics. But beyond this passion arose a growing love for other visually stunning locations around the world. See my Travel & Tropical Islands page and discover how readily that can happen, and then enjoy some of my favorite travel photographs on my Recent Trips page.

Self-taught in the photographic arts, I maintained an interest in photography while completing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. The rat race immediately claimed me, and despite an increasingly hectic work schedule, I continued my photography whenever possible. Beginning in 1997, I began a second career in freelance photography and writing.

I focus on images capturing the beauty found around us. Most of it is natural, on occasion it’s man-made. Sometimes it’s completely devoid of people, and at other times crowds fill the frame. My current travel and stock photography uses a digital Nikon camera system for quality, practicality, and ruggedness. My fine art photographs are presented in my Favorites page. These photographs were captured on 35mm and medium format film using Nikon, Hasselblad, and Fuji camera systems.

I enjoy writing also, and my publication credits include:

  • Chicago Tribune Magazine
  • Los Angeles Times
  • San Francisco Examiner
  • The Dallas Morning News
  • The New Orleans Times-Picayune
